Picton To Kaikoura

How to Get To Kaikoura by Car from Picton

Driving from Picton to Kaikoura is an adventure that takes you through some of New Zealand’s most scenic landscapes. This journey covers approximately 156 kilometers (about 97 miles) along State Highway 1, primarily following the stunning coastline of the South Island. The drive typically takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic and the time you spend at various stopping points. Along the way, there are several beautiful places to stop and explore, making the trip even more enjoyable.

One of the first notable stopping points when leaving Picton is the picturesque town of Blenheim. Located around 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Picton, Blenheim is situated in the heart of Marlborough wine country. The region is renowned for its vineyards and wineries, offering opportunities for wine tastings and tours. Many travelers choose to stop here to sample the local wine, especially the famous Sauvignon Blanc. Additionally, Blenheim has charming cafes and restaurants where you can grab a meal before continuing your journey.

As you continue your drive, you will encounter the small coastal town of Seddon, which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Picton. While Seddon is less touristy than some of the other stops, it offers a taste of local life and a chance to stretch your legs. The town has beautiful parks and gardens, making it an ideal spot for a quick break. You might also want to visit the nearby Awatere Valley, known for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities. This stop allows travelers to appreciate the rural landscape that characterizes much of the South Island.

After leaving Seddon, the journey continues along the breathtaking Kaikoura Coast. One of the best aspects of this drive is the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. A must-stop along this route is the famous Kaikoura lookout point, where travelers can park and take in the breathtaking scenery. This area is known for its marine wildlife, and you might even spot seals lounging on the rocky shores. Taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty can make the drive feel more rewarding.

Finally, upon reaching Kaikoura, travelers are welcomed by a vibrant coastal town that is famous for its marine life and outdoor activities. Kaikoura is well-known for whale watching tours, and many visitors opt to partake in these experiences. Additionally, you can explore local seafood, particularly the fresh crayfish, a specialty of the area. The town also offers beautiful walks along the coastline, where you can enjoy the stunning views and possibly spot dolphins or seals. Driving from Picton to Kaikoura not only provides a delightful road trip experience but also a chance to create lasting memories in one of New Zealand's most beautiful regions.
